Biography:


Nine Inch Nails was formed in 1988 by Trent Reznor, who remains the sole permanent member of the "group." Reznor writes and performs all of the music on Nine Inch Nails' albums, but enlists a full band to perform the music live. Largely credited for bringing "industrial" music to the masses, NIN rose to fame in the 1990s and quickly became one of the most critically-acclaimed and influential artists of the last 25 years. The group is as notorious for its meticulously-crafted studio recordings as it is for its intense and chaotic live performances. Through its 18 year history Reznor's music has continued to innovate and evolve, long since shedding NIN's industrial roots and solidifying itself as one of the few relevant rock groups of the 21st century. In 1997 Time Magazine named Trent Reznor one of the 10 most influential people in the world.

Nine inch Nails' influence spans throughout the music world, and includes collaborations with prominent musicians such as David Bowie and Dr. Dre. In 2004, the final single from country legend Johnny Cash was a cover of NIN's "Hurt." Its raw emotion and chillingly introspective video won widespread critical acclaim for both Cash and Reznor. On the opposite end of the musical spectrum, NIN is largely credited for the popularity of shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, whose breakthrough albums were produced by Trent Reznor and released on Reznor's Nothing Records label. NIN has also made its mark in the film world, with Reznor producing the highly-acclaimed soundtracks to Oliver Stone's Natural Born Killers and David Lynch's Lost Highway. The band's own visuals have been equally significant, from a highly controversial (and ultimately unreleased) "snuff" film created for their Broken EP, to director Mark Romanek's stunning video for "Closer," which is regarded as one of the best music videos of all time.



Significant Releases:


Pretty Hate Machine (1989) - NIN's synth-heavy debut album included the 1990 hit "Head Like A Hole."


Broken (1992) - A loud and aggressive guitar-heavy EP which landed Reznor a Grammy for the single "Wish."


The Downward Spiral (1994) - A masterpiece concept album regarded as one of the definitive recordings of its decade. The songs "Closer" and "Hurt" propelled NIN into international fame.


The Fragile (1999) - A sweeping and epic double album featuring beautifully crafted layers of sound and a wide range of emotions. Universally praised by critics but ultimately too challenging for the mass market, The Fragile remains the favorite amongst discerning NIN fans.


With Teeth (2005) - NIN's most recent album found Reznor leaving the carefulness of The Fragile behind and taking a brutal, stripped-down approach. Despite music industry doubts that NIN would find commercial success after five years of absence, the album's first single, the politically-charged "The Hand That Feeds," became the number one modern rock song of 2005, and NIN's first number one single in its history. The second single, "Only," also hit number one on the modern rock charts.
